Vaiyapuri Gopalsamy commonly known as Vaiko is a famous Indian politician. Vaiko was born on 22 May 1944 in Kalingapatty, Madras Presidency in British India. He is an educated man and he graduated with a Gold Medal in his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economic from the St. Xavier’s College, Palayam kottai and he did his masters from the Presidency College, Chennai and further pursued masters in law from Madras Law College. Vaiko got married Renuka Devi on 14th June 1971. The couple is blessed with three children. Vaiko loves to write in his free time and he has also a written several books. He also writes columns and essays for the newspapers. He is the general secretary of MDMK and his party has recently quit from the People’s Welfare Front and shocked a lot of people. He also met the Prime Minister Mr. Modi and said his decision of economic reforms to curb the black money was historic.
Vaiko started his political career at an early age and he was a part of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and was formerly seen as the ideological protégé of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi. Vaiko is currently the general secretary of the leading political party Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (MDMK). Vaiko was detained for more than a year during the emergency period because of organizing black flag against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Vaiko became the member of Rajya Sabha in the year 1978 and entered the upper house for three consecutive terms. He has also been elected as the member of Lok Sabha twice. Vaiko is known for his speeches in the Parliament. He also supported the LTTE and demanded a separate country for the Tamils in Shri Lanka. Apart from that, Vaiko is also a philanthropist. He started the Marumalarchi Blood Donor’s club to help the poor. He has also gone on a long padyatra in Tamil Nadu for the interlinking of the state rivers in India.
