Top 10 Must Watch South Indian Horror Movies

Audiences get a lot of Goosebumps while watching the spooky things in South Indian Horror film. When fascination for Hollywood spangled the entire Tamil Nadu, some brilliant horror movies came forth to offer something beyond the imagination and fascination. In the field of horror movies, it’s not as easy to swallow something good without criticism; such horror movies are masterpieces of a filmmaker, whose personal influence and artistic control over the movie is so good that filmmaker of the film is perceived as the author of the movie. 10. Kanchana 2

This is a hit horror movie with comedy, released in Tamil, in 2015. This movie was produced, written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, who endorsed dual roles in it. This film is the third version of the Muni series after launching Muni 2: Kanchana. Casts of this film were Nithya Menen, Taapsee Pannu and Kovai Sarala. In 2012, Lawrence started working on the third installment in the Muni franchise that is later tilted as Muni 3: Ganga. Taapsee Pannu played as a lead female role, whereas Anjali is said to be signed for the role of Ganga, who is later replaced with Nithya Menen. The film was I Production for over 2 years.


This movie is a horror anthology film in Tamil that is written and directed by Hari Shankar and Hareesh Narayan. The film features different horror stories shot in five different places, namely Japan, Midsea of Bay of Bengal, Dubai, remote ATM booth of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. This movie released in 2014 being produced by KTVR Creative Frames and got a huge amount of positive reviews for a good screenplay.

8. Yaamirukka Bayamey

This is 2014’s comedy horror movie that is written and directed by debutant Deekay and produced by Elred Kumar. The casts in this film were Rupa Manjari, Elred Kumar, Karuna, Anaswara Kumar and Oviya. This film was released in 2014 and was successful to achieve a lot of positive reviews. A remake of Yaamirukka Bayamey was made in Kannada which as Namo Boothatma. However, the film Yaamirukka Bayamey is based on a Korean film, “The Quiet Family” and previously the title of this film was llla Aanalum. On its opening day in Tamil Nadu, this film earned approximately 2.42 crores from 262 screens.

7. Aranmanai

This is an Indian Tamil Horror comedy film that is co-written and directed by Sundar C. This film features an ensemble cast that included Hansika Motwani, Sundar C., Rai Laxmi, Vinay Rai, Andrea Jeremiah, Nithin Sathya, Kovai Sarala and Manobala. This film has been released in 2014 and got a lot of positive reviews. Due to massive success, a sequel titled Aranmanai 2 released at the beginning of 2016. However, this film is the remake of a movie named Aayiram Jenmangal (1978). This film was given a U/A certificate by Indian Censor Board.

6. Pizza

This supernatural horror thriller South Indian film is written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and the casts were Remya Nambeesan and Vijay Sehupathi in lead roles. The story was all about the way a pizza delivery boy lands in mysterious plot and that in return changed his life. This movie released in 2012 and achieved a huge commercial success. This movie was later dubbed in Telugu as Pizza and remade in the names of “Golpo Holeo Shotti”, “Pizza” and “Whistle” respectively into Bengali, Hindi and Kannada movies.

5. Kanchana

kanchana is a comedy horror film in Tamil, which is written and produced by Raghava Lawrence. This movie was the sequel of writer’s first venture Muni in 2007. In this film, the writer and producer Lawrence features himself as lead role with title character Sarathkumar and Lakshmi Rai in other roles. This movie was released in July 2011. Kanchana was later dubbed into Telugu with the same title. Although both of the original and dubbed one got the mixed review; these films managed to get a good commercial success in both languages.

4. Pisasu

Under the B studio, this Tamil horror film of 2014 is written and directed by Mysskin and produced by Bala. Newcomers like Naga and Prayag Martin, Radharavi Kalyani N and Harish Uthaman got chance to make debut in the south Indian film.  This film got highly positive reviews that later got dubbed in Telugu named “Pisachi”. Even, the film was again remade in Kannada as Rakshasi. In order to write this film, Mysskin left for the USA to pen down the script. Even this film bagged 1.18 Crore on its first day.

3. Anandhapurathu Veedu

This supernatural mystery movie was released in 2010, which is co-written and directed by Tamil television director Naga. Apart from Naga’s serials like Marmadesam, Chidambara and Vidathu Karuppu, this was Naga’s feature film debut. Stars like Nandha and Chaya Singh was in lead roles in this film. As per some critical receptions, New Indian Express said that it neither made audience scared nor generated the laughter. Even, Sify wrote that it didn’t go up to the promise. However, this film has gained a massive success at box office.

2. Eeram

Venkatachalam, a new director in the film industry, directed Eeram, a Romantic horror movie in Tamil and S. Sankar produced the film. Venkatachalam took Aadhi and Sindhu Menon in lead roles and Nandha in supporting roles and the film was released in 2009. Whereas, a Telugu dubbed version soon followed as”Vaishali.” The film took 1200 screens worldwide and was a blockbuster at the box office. Music in this movie was composed by a newcomer in industry named S. Thaman.

13B was released in the year of 2009 in Hindi, as a bilingual horror movie (Tamil-Hindi). Whereas, another version in Tamil known as Anandhapurathu Veedu. This movie is written and directed by Vikram Kumar, who took Madhavan and Neetu Chandra in lead roles. Being produced by George Pius and Suresh Balaje, the film was simultaneously filmed and released in Hindi and Tamil Language. With mix reviews from Bollywood and high positive reviews from critics in Tamil, this film made 16 crores of business at Tamil box office, and Hindi version made 56 crores of business.
