Top 10 Great Indian War Heroes After Independence

India is a country of war heroes. Prior to independence there were the freedom fighters and after independence we have our war heroes. These heroes risk life and limb to protect our country and keep all Indians safe. Here are the top 10 great Indian war heroes after Independence.

10. Lieutenant-Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa

Lieutenant-Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa was one of the best war heroes in India who was pressed into service in the war against China in 1962. When Chinese troops attacked his troops in the region of Ladakh, the Indian soldiers were outnumbered. However Lieutenant-Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa was brave and commanded his men to hold the post. He eventually ended up killing many Chinese troops in a hand to hand combat. Although he was captured by the Chinese army, he was later released. He was the recipient of the prestigious Param Vir Chakra award for his courage and bravery.

9. Naik Jadu Nath Singh

Naik Jadu Nath Singh was one of the most heroic Indian soldiers during the war of 1947. Although his troop was surrounded by the enemy, Naik Jadu Nath Singh and his men fought back with courage. This actually confused the enemy with regards to the number of Indian soldiers there. The enemy eventually retreated and Naik Jadu Nath Singh and his men saved the port. The enemy attacked again and Naik Jadu Nath Singh’s men were already injured. They tried and saved the post for a second time. When the enemy attacked for a third time, Naik Jadu Nath Singh attacked fought alone with valor and the enemy fled. However Naik Jadu Nath Singh got two bullets in his head and died a brave death.

8. Major Somnath Sharma – First recipient of Param Veer Chakra

Major Somnath Sharma was one of the main war leaders in 1947 who prevented Srinagar from going into the hands of Pakistan. Major Somnath Sharma was surrounded by the enemy by three sides and although he knew that he would not make it out alive, he continued to fight for Srinagar and prevented the enemies to take on. He was outnumbered 7 to one, but he managed to use his machine gun and take down as many of them as he could. Major Somnath Sharma was injured during this fight and eventually he lost his life when a mortar shell exploded near him. Before passing his last words were to HQ in order to send back up “The enemies are only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to our last man and our last round.” This message enabled the Indian Air Force to send in troops and protect Srinagar.

7. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was climbing the cliff and moving towards a flat top area in the war of Kargil. Once he scaled the cliff, he and his team were attacked from an enemy bunker. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar ran towards his own bunker and started firing his automatic gun. He got two bullets however that did not slow him down. He killed three of the enemy in their bunker and then targeted another enemy bunker. The enemy fled away. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was awarded the prestigious Param Veer Chakra and currently serves in the Indian army as Naib  Subedar.

6. Lieutenant Colonel Ardeshir Tarapore

Lieutenant Colonel Ardeshir Tarapore was severely injured in the war against Pakistan in 1965; however he did not back down. He and his men moved forward and destroyed every one of the enemy soldiers that were within his range. Although he motivated his troops, he lost his life in the bargain. He was awarded the highest bravery award in India – the Param Veer Chakra.

5. Flying Office Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon

Flying Office Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon is known as a lone soldier who fought 6 enemy air craft’s. He initially fought two air craft’s and then went on to fight four more air craft’s that attacked Sekhon. He lost his life in the process of saving the Srinagar Air Base. He is the only Indian Air Force office to be given the Param Veer Chakra.

4. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal was known to make the enemy withdraw their tanks and capturing many personnel of the enemy. He single-handedly destroyed four tanks and was hit by a tank as well. This brave deed from him helped the Indians capture a strong point from the enemy. He is considered one of the greatest war heroes of India.

3. Lance Naik Albert Ekka

Lance Naik Albert Ekka is a Param Veer Chakra Award Winner who lost his life fighting for the country during the 1971 war against Pakistan. He was one of the bravest soldiers who saved the lives of many Indian soldiers by single-handedly taking on the enemy bunker that was attacking them. He suffered a number of injuries during this attack and while he managed to kill the enemies he also lost his life. However, this brave step managed to protect the life of a number of soldiers.

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was one of the greatest war heroes in India. He single-handedly fought enemies and helped capture Tiger Hill. He also kept himself alive to give information to the headquarters that the Pakistani Army was on its way back with heavy reinforcement.

Captain Vikram Batra

Captain Vikram Batra fought the Kargil war during 1999 and was a very successful hero at that. He managed to protect multiple war points and stood strong in front of the Pakistan army. He took a bullet to his chest when asked to step aside and died a martyr.
