Sawan Shivaratri 2016 Date, Vrat, Puja Shubh Muhurat Timings

Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha is usually observed during Masik Shivaratri or Masa Shivaratri. During this period devotees of Lord Shiva observe a fast and make it a point to worship the Shiva Linga during all Shivaratri’s in the year. A year usually consists of twelve Shivaratri days. The Shivaratri that falls during the month of Shravana is called the Sawan Shivaratro/ The entire month of Shravana is dedicated towards Shiva Puja. The occasion of Masa Shivaratri that occurs in the month of Sawan is considered the most auspicious. However, the most important Shivaratri is Maha Shivaratri, which falls in the month of February or March corresponding with the month of Phalguna. Shiva Temples in North India arrange for special puja’s and arrange for Shiva Darshan as well during the month of Sawan. Various devotees of Lord Shiva pay their homage during the month of Sawan and perform Gangajal Abhishekam as well.

Sawan Shivaratri is very popular in most of the Northern states in India which include Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. These states follow the Purnimant Lunar Calendar whereas states like Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka follow the Amavasyant Lunar Calendar and here Savan Shivaratri is celebrated as Ashadha Shivratri. On the day of Sawan Shivaratri devotees fast for the entire day and eat only one meal which is to be consumed in the morning. They then break their fast and seek blessings from Lord Shiva the following day. They also continue to pray during their fast so they can successfully complete the fast without any interruptions.

On the day of Shivaratri, devotees should take a bath in the evening before they pay a visit to the temple to perform the puja. While some devotees perform the puja in their home, the second bath in the evening is essential. It is believed that a devotee should break the fast or vrat between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi in order to get the maximum benefit from the fast. The timings or muhurat for the fast is given below.

Nishita Kaal Puja Time = 24:22+ to 25:07+

Duration = 0 Hours 44 Mins

On 2nd, Sawan Shivaratri Parana Time = After 06:19

Ratri First Prahar Puja Time = 19:10 to 21:57

Ratri Second Prahar Puja Time = 21:57 to 24:44+

Ratri Third Prahar Puja Time = 24:44+ to 27:32+

Ratri Fourth Prahar Puja Time = 27:32+ to 30:19+

Chaturdashi Tithi Begins = 04:42 on 1/Aug/2016

Chaturdashi Tithi Ends = 03:14 on 2/Aug/2016
