Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500: The First Choice of Bike Lovers!

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 continues to win the hearts and minds of bike lovers.

Introduced first time in Delhi Auto Expo 2012, Royal Enfield Thunderbird has never looked back. It remains ever popular amongst bike lovers and the reason is not far to seek.

The Look:

Thunderbird carries the same design as the original, but certain notable changes like a circular LED projector type headlight, a first in any Enfield bike, makes this bike special. It retains its true cruiser image with its upraised handlebar, and lack of visor and cowl. Its other features include small round side indicators on the both sides of the headlight, beefy front forks, short front fender and a familiar long and heavy chrome silencer. The rounded large fuel tank sports a 3D logo. A split seat and backrest for the rear passenger are new additions to this bike.

The Console:

The naked instrument twin dials in chrome-finish, characteristic of the Royal Enfield bikes, are present here too. What is different is a combined analogue-digital meter console that no other Royal Enfield bike possesses. The two circular dials, framed in chrome rings, get illuminated through a blue back light. While the speedometer and tachometer are analogue, its odometer, clock, 2-tripmeter and fuel gauge are digital LCD.

The Performance:

The single-cylinder, twin spark, air cooled, 4-stroke 500cc engine, same as in other Royal Enfield bikes, gives a power output of 27.2 BHP at 5250 rpm and torque output of 41.3 Nm at 4000 rpm. The engine is wedded with a five-speed manual gearbox and works on a one gear down and four gears up-shift pattern. Well matched gear ratios obviate the need for frequent gear shifts.

The Ride:

This powerful bike is a joy to ride. For thrill seekers, this bike can easily cross 130 kmph. Even the high speed cruising is without any vibrations and harshness. The new braking and suspension system makes for easy handling and manoeuvring. However, in city traffic it may lack stability while turning at slow speeds, because of its heavy weight.

The Consumption:

The bike is high on consumption, giving a mileage of around 32 kmpl on highways and still higher in city traffic.

The Comfort and Safety:

What makes Thunderbird fun to ride is the comfort it affords to the rider, what with its highly cushioned seat with good under-thigh support, split seat and rear backrest for pillion rider, a vibration-free wide and angled handlebar with engine kill switch and firm palm grip. Its front-set foot pegs provide correct riding posture, adding to the riding comfort. The front telescopic forks of 41mm and gas-charged rear shock absorbers helps to stabilise the bike. Adding to the safety are the front disc brake of 280mm and rear disc brake of 240mm.

The Verdict:

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 may seem overpriced, but the power of the machine and sheer joy of high-speed cruising offsets the price to a large extent. If you want to enjoy the Royal Enfield charm and don’t care too much about mileage, this is the bike for you. The new features make it more reliable than its previous versions. It is a great bike with some of great power and performance. It comes one of the trusted bike brand of India. It has everything which a biker ever dreams of. Just follow the right bike. This one is made for you. Go for it.
