Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian Astronaut, who went to space, turned 67 years old on 13th January 2017.  He made a history in the 80’s proving his capabilities and became a pioneer in the Field of piloting and making India the 14th Nation who traveled to space. He brought a new perspective to the country. Rakesh Sharma was born in Patiala, Punjab. He has attended the St. George’s Grammar School in Hyderabad. After finishing his schooling he got an admission into the National Defense Academy as a trainee for the Air Force in the year 1966. Rakesh Sharma is married to Madhu, and the couple stayed in Russia in the year 1982 where they even picked up the language. They have a son Kapil who is a film director and a daughter Kritika who is a media Artist. He was always very focused and determined and became a pilot after four years of his training.

Career:

Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian who traveled to Space. He joined as a pilot in the Indian Air Force in the year 1970. He was also a part of the War, which took place against Pakistan. He was appointed as the Squadron leader and pilot of the Indian Air Force in the year 1982. He was then selected by the ISRO and the Soviet Intercosmos Space Program on 20th September 1982 to become a cosmonaut and go into the space. In the year 1984, Rakesh flew abroad the Soviet Rocket Soyuz T-11, which took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakh Soviet Socialist on April 2, 1984. The Soyuz T-11 had three members including Rakesh. He spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes orbiting around Earth in the space station called as Salyut 7 where he and his team conducted various scientific and technical studies that included 43 experimental sessions. His work was mainly concerned with the field of Biomedicine and remote sensing. Rakesh Sharma retired with the rank of the wing commander and later joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in the year 1987 and became the chief Pilot in HAL Nashik Division till the year 1992 and later moved to Bangalore and became the chief Test Pilot of HAL. He was also associated with the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas. The Government of India awarded Rakesh Sharma with the Ashok Chakra. He was also given the honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union after his return from the space.
