Kiran Bedi was born on 9th June 1949 and she was the first woman to join the police service and became the IPS officer. She is a also a social activist, a politician and a former tennis player. She joined the IPS in the year 1972. Kiran belonged to well-to-do business family in Amritsar. She is the second girl of Prakash Lal Peshawaria. Kiran has three sisters. She is a well-educated woman and she has done her Ph.D in social science from IIT Delhi. Apart from that, Kiran holds various other degrees such as BA (hons) English, MA in Political Science, and LL.B. Kiran was married to Brij Bedi in the year 1972, the two met in the tennis court in Amritsar. The couple had a daughter. Brij passed away in the year 2016. The couple lived separately in most their married life, because of their work.
Kiran was the first IPS officer in India and served for 35 years. She voluntarily resigned from her post in the year 2007. In her early days Kiran won the national and state championship awards for tennis. She started her career as the Assistant Superintendent Police in Chankyapuri Delhi and later became the IPS officer. She has also served in the Delhi Prisons as inspector general. In 2003, Kiran was appointed as the Police advisor to the secretary-general of the United Nations. She served in the department of Peace keeping Operations and resigned in the year 2007. Kiran became a social activist and joined founded Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation, which will provide residential treatment to the alcohol and drug addicts. In 2010, she joined Arvind Kejriwal to fight the Corruption and in 2010 the tow joined hands with Anna Hazare to form the India Against Corruption group. They started the hunger strike for the lokpal bill. In 2014, Kiran Bedi supported Narendra Modi. She also stood for the CM chair for Delhi but lost the battle against Kejriwal. On May 22, 2016 Kiran Bedi became the lieutenant governor of Puducherry.
Kiran Bedi hosted a show called Aapkikacheri on Star Plus from 2008-2011, where she solved the day-to-day conflicts of people.
Kiran Bedi has always been an inspiring figure for everyone. She has won several awards in her career few to be named are Cadet officer Award, President’s Police medal for gallantry, Lion of the year, Pride of India, Most admired woman in the country, FICCI award of excellence, L’Oreal Paris Femina women Award and many more awards. She has also written several books such as Demand for Swaraj, It’s always possible: one woman’s transformation of tihar prison, As I See, What went wrong?….. And continues, Be the change: Fighting Corruption and many other books. A lot of people have also made biographies and documentaries on her.
