Irom Chanu Sharmila, known as the ‘Iron lady of India’ or ‘ Mengoubi’ was born on 14 March 1972. Irom was born and brought up in Manipur, one of the seven sister states in the India’s Northeast region. The place has suffered a lot of insurgency for years. Irom is a civil right activist, and she is famous for hunger strike, which lasted for 16 years. She is strong woman and she hungry without food and water for those 16 years, fighting for the rights of the people. In the year 2005-15 almost 5,500 people died due to the political violence. In the year 1958, the government passed a law, where the seven sisters will be protected by the armed forces, where the army will be allowed to search without providing warrants, can use deadly force in case of doubt of some unwanted activities and can arrest people. Irom was always involved in the local peace movements, which was set to stop the human rights abuses in Manipur.

Irom Sharmila is a civil right activist and she stared her hunger strike when she was just 28 years old. She fasted for 16 years, which was the longest fast in the history of the world. She broke her fast on 9 august 2016 in her hometown Manipur. She decided to fast to protest against the AFSPA in the year 200, where Malom Massacre took place. To protest that, Irom started fasting on 5th November and decided not to drink or eat. She was arrested just three days after her strike and was charged with a suicide case. Sharmila has been arrested and released several times during her striking period. In the year 2004, Sharmila became an iconic figure in public. In the year 2011, she invited Anna Hazare to Manipur. In 2011, Manipur All India Trinamool Congress, showed their support to her and called Mamta Banerjee, who was the party chief to show her support. On her 11th year of fasting she approached the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and asked to repeal the law. On 3rd November 100 women formed a chain to support Sharmila. On 28 March, Sharmila was released from the judicial custody as the local court rejected the charges against her. She broke her fast on 9 August 2016 and she wanted to break her fast by eating rice from her mother’s hand. She still continues to fight to repeal the AFSPA and want to eliminate it completely.
