We are just four days away from tickets going on sale to Pokémon GO’s big live event in Grant Park in Chicago, but we still don’t have any idea what it actually is besides “festivities.” But when the event was announced, it was implied that other global events would follow, and now a bunch of those have been detailed for Europe. And I don’t think they’re what people were expecting.

Ever since Niantic floated the concept of summer live events, fans got it in their heads that these were going to be how Pokémon GO would introduce Legendary Pokémon into the game at last. This idea was inspired by both the initial trailer, which shows the mass battling of players with Mewtwo in Time Square, and the fact that Niantic has said repeatedly that both live events and Legendary Pokémon were coming to the game this summer. The idea was that these two things were linked, but that does not appear to be the case.

From June 17th to July 30th, there will be a series of live Pokémon GO events held at Unibail-Rodamco shopping malls all over Europe. And…what can players expect to find there? From the official Facebook announcement:

“At these events, you’ll be able to take pictures with Pikachu, meet other Trainers, and catch lots of Pokémon at the many PokeStops, which will have Lure Modules activated all day!”

So it’s…essentially a “Meet Santa” event with one of those inflatable Pikachus, no doubt. Plus there will be a bunch of lures up as Unibail-Rodamco malls have a bunch of sponsored PokeStops in them.

I mean, this is fine. It’s still cool to have little Pokémon Go get-togethers, but again, the common notion is that because a few dozen of these live events were being announced across the world, that maybe them being Legendary events was real.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Niantic is not going to restrict Legendary spawns to a few select places around the world, and that is not the purpose of these live events. Given that these are starting in two days and ending at the end of July I won’t rule out that Legendaries might be at these events eventually (certainly not two days from now), given that Niantic has promised them this summer, but it will not be the only place you get them, as they will have to spawn in more places than just a few dozen hotspots around the world. But because Niantic is being so murky with their plans, that’s leading players to simply have to guess at what these events actually are. In this case, these details reflect something that could be fun, but “meet Pikachu” certainly seems aimed at a younger set, and this will likely not be more than a few booths and some lures.

I maintain that it’s absolutely crazy that four days before tickets go on sale for the much larger Chicago event, that there are still zero details about what the event will contain. We have more details about these mall events, at this point. This is a huge event where people will have to book flights and hotels and pay for tickets, and yet Niantic has said nothing about the actual content of the meet-up. That’s a problem that needs to be rectified, and something I will dive into at a different day.

Until then, if you want to go to one of these European mall events, knock yourself out, just make sure to manage expectations. Here are the dates:

– June 17: Paris, France – Les Quatre Temps – Cnit

– June 24: Paris, France – Centre Commercial – Rosny 2

– June 30: Munich, Germany – Pasing Arcaden

– July 1: Oberhausen, Germany – CentrO Oberhausen

– July 8 & 9: Copenhagen, Denmark – Fisketorvet Shopping Center

– July 15: Madrid, Spain – Parquesur

– July 21: Barcelona, Spain – La Maquinista

– July 29 & 30: Stockholm, Sweden – Mall of Scandinavia

I hope Pikachu is nice in real life. You know what they say, never meet your heroes.
