Dileep Padgoankar was born on 1st May in 1944 in Pune, India. He spent his childhood back there in Pune before switching to greener pastures. He attended St. Vincent High School and completed his matriculation there. He then joined Fergusson College as part of his college education. He graduated with political science from Fergusson College.

He further went on to study in France and earned a doctoral degree in Social Science from the University of Paris, Sorbonne.

He was admitted to the hospital adhering to a massive heart attack followed by multi-organ failure on 18th November 2016. However, he did not respond to treatment and breathed his last on 25th November 2016.



He started his career in journalism aged 24. During his time in France, he served as the Paris correspondent for Times of India. He continued to serve the paper in different capacities before being appointed as the editor in 1988. He distinguishably held the position of editor for six years.

He also had stints working for UNESCO from 1978 to 1986 in Bangkok and Paris. In lieu of his charisma and capability, he was appointed as one of the members of the three-member Interlocutors Group for Jammu and Kashmir in 2008 by the then government.
