Harpal Singh Sokhi was born and raised in West Bengal as his father worked with Indian Railways. Harpal completed his studies at South Eastern Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School. He has one brother and two sisters. His inspiration for becoming a chef came with the food his mother used to cook. Since his father used to travel extensively, it gave Harpal an opportunity to try different cuisines from around India. His brother was also involved in making food at a gurudwara for langar. Harpal can speak six languages which include English, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu and Oriya.
Harpal also tried becoming an engineer; however failed to do so as he was not that sharp at studies. He also wanted to join the Indian Air Force; however he was overage by the time he decided to apply. He finally enrolled for hotel management course at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Bhubaneshwar in 1984. By 1987 he completed his diploma in catering from IHM Bhubaneshwar and started working at The Oberoi in Bhubaneshwar as a trainee cook. He became an executive chef by the time he turned 27.
Harpal then spent his next few years learning and mastering international cuisines. He had the privilege of learning the art of Hyderabadi style cooking from the great Ustad Habib Pasha and Begum Mumtaz Khan. He also conducted a lot of research on Ayurveda based food to learn new ways to help improve the nutritive value and the taste of food.
Harpal Singh Sokhi is a very popular chef in India. He has worked in a number of high end restaurants. In 2013 Harpal opened his own restaurant called ‘The Funjabi Tadka’. He is the director of ‘Turban Tadka’ hospitality. Harpal has organized a number of Indian food festivals all over the world. He writes for a number of food magazines and newspapers and is a favorite with home makers and budding cooks. Harpal has a number of cooking shows to his credit and he is not an unknown face on television. Harpal has also been a part of some endorsements.
He will now be seen as a contestant on Jhalak Dhiklaja. It is going to be fun to watch this chef turn into a dancer for the show. Considering his huge fan following, Harpal could be one of the strongest contestants on the show.
