Amazing Facts About The Legendary Indian Hockey Player Mohammed Shahid

Mohammed Shahid was a great Indian hockey player. He was one of the best players to have represented India and was famous for his amazing dribbling skills. He was part of the legendary Indian Hockey team that won the Olympic Gold at the 1980 Moscow Games.

Mohammed Shahid was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1980 – 1981 and he received the Padma Shri award in 1986. Mohammed Shahid was born in Varanasi located in Uttar Pradesh on April 14th 1960. He made an appearance for the Indian Junior hockey team at the 1976 Junior World Cup that was held in France. He made his first appearance for the senior team in the very same year under the captaincy of Vasudevan Baskaran. Mohammed Shahid struck an amazing on field partnership with Zafar Iqbal. Zafar and Shahid together were threatening to all defenses around the world.

  • Mohammed Shahid started playing for India back in 1979. He was just 19 years at that time. Mohammed Shahid played for the Junior World Cup in France.
  • He played the first series so well, he was soon included as a part of the senior team and he went on to play in the four nation tournament in Malaysia.
  • Mohammed Shahid was best known for his fast footwork which was combined with his quick and precise ability to dribble the ball in the right direction. This was also considered as his signature style.
  • Mohammed Shahid was part of a few legendary teams. The Olympic Gold winning team at the Moscow Olympics, the Silver Medal winning team at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi and the Bronze medal winning team at the 1986 Asian Games held in Seoul. This was considered the golden era of Indian hockey and due to these performances hockey managed to retain its popularity among the fans while the sport of cricket started booming.
  • Mohammed Shahid was appointed the captain of the Indian senior Hockey team from 1985 to 1986. His captaincy never affected his on-field performances.
  • Mohammed Shahid was a member of the Asian All-Star team in 1986. He was chosen based on his performance in the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul.
  • When Mohammed Shahid retired from hockey, he started working for the Indian Railways in Varanasi. He was appointed as the sports officer with the Railways.

Shahid was admitted to Medanta Hospital in June 2016. He was diagnosed with a liver condition. Shahid was later airlifted from Varanasi to Gurugram when the hospital ignored the fact that he could be suffering from jaundice. However, Shahid’s condition continued to worsen and he succumbed to Kidney failure on the 20th of July 2016.
